The Theology of Christian Perfecting

Author: T.A. Noble

Holy Trinity, Holy People

Rating: 3.5 out of five stars

About the Book

Teaching on the sanctification of Christians using the difficult word perfection has been part of Christian spirituality through the centuries. The Fathers spoke of it and Augustine particularly contributed his penetrating analysis of human motivation in terms of love. Medieval theologians such as Bernard and Thomas Aquinas developed the tradition and wrote of levels or ”degrees” of ”perfection” in love. However, the doctrine has not fared so well among Protestants. John Wesley was the one major Protestant leader who tried to blend this ancient tradition of Christian ”perfection” with the Reformation proclamation of justification by grace through faith.

This book seeks to develop Wesley’s synthesis of patristic and Reformation theology in order to consider how Christian ”perfection” can be expressed in a more nuanced way in today’s culture. Noble examines what basis may be found for Wesley’s understanding of sanctification in the central doctrines of the church, particularly the atonement, the doctrine of Christ, and the most comprehensive of all Christian doctrines, the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. What he sets out is a fully trinitarian theology of holiness.

Review

T.A. Noble provides a look at Christian perfecting through a detailed study of the John Wesley and the Wesleyan Method. He provides an introduction and understanding of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral, while describing the art of perfecting the one through the entirety of the group.

About the Book

Victoria Donnelly wants to do something right at least once in her lifetime. With five years of failed courtships behind her and the calendar inching closer to another birthday, she’s finally found a way to redeem herself in the eyes of her family. But her plan requires her to return to her home town of Eagle Harbor, where forgotten feelings for a man she can never have lie buried.

Elijah Cummings has loved Victoria for fifteen years. But fishermen’s sons don’t marry shipping barons’ daughters. He knows it. She knows it. The entire town knows it. Resolved to keep his distance from Victoria, Elijah focuses on establishing a much needed life-saving station, risking his own life by rescuing sailors stuck aboard shipwrecks… until he learns she’s about to make an irreversible decision, one she’ll spend the rest of her life regretting.

He knows how to save drowning sailors—but how is he to save the woman he loves from the biggest mistake of her life… without destroying both their hearts in the process?

Come back in time and revisit the remote town of Eagle Harbor, Michigan, in this memorable story of love, courage, and drama by fan-favorite author Naomi Rawlings.

I HAVE LOVED YOU WITH AN EVERLASTING LOVE
This is the second book in the Eagle Harbor series but can read easily as a stand-alone. It does have many of the characters from the first book, Love’s Unfading Light. What a beautiful story and a reminder that God has created each of us fearfully and wonderfully. That includes any imperfections or flaws that others may see. Victoria Donnelly feels inferior to others, she is tall and does not think herself pretty, but even worse, she stutters. Elijah Cummings has always been a champion for Victoria and has been in love with her since they were in grade school. Gilbert Sinclair and Elijah have been at war since school, and even as adults, they battle, for land and her affections. What happens when Gilbert proposes marriage to Victoria with the encouragement of her parents? She is no more than a pawn in their game. What happens as the town becomes divided regarding a new dock and warehouse by Gilbert and the request for a U.S. Life-Saving Service station by Elijah and both are vying for the same piece of land? This story is a beautiful story of faith, family and friends. The plot kept me captivated with a cast of delightful characters, heartwarming moments and the love of God without feeling like a preachy story. “When a man’s way please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.”

About the Book

No matter how hard she tries to help, Rebekah Cummings always ends up causing more problems than she solves. This time, though, things will be different. She’ll find a way to pay her family’s debts, even if doing so requires leaving Eagle Harbor. Maybe then they’ll start treating her as a capable woman who makes her own choices.

Gilbert Sinclair is going to marry an heiress. With his latest business venture sunk at the bottom of Lake Superior, he needs money to replace the steamship he lost, so he heads to Chicago where his father’s business connections should land him a suitable wife. Like most things in his meticulously planned life, everything goes as expected—until he discovers Rebekah Cummings working as the new cook on his ship.

Rebekah well remembers the pain she endured the last time she tried trusting Gilbert, and Gilbert can’t afford to pursue the love of a working class woman. But they can’t stop the forgotten feelings swirling between them—or ignore the sacrifices they’d both have to make for a future together.

If you love Christian romance, small towns, and historical places that come alive on the page, then you will love Love’s Sure Dawn.

SEEKING GOD’S GUIDANCE IN EVERYTHING
This third story in the Eagle Harbor series can read as a standalone. I love series and seeing people we find in previous stories and meeting new ones. This story did not fail to share so many emotions of love, forgiveness, and acceptance. This story has a strong lesson and reminder of seeking God first in everything and waiting on his guidance in our life. The story kept me captivated and the pages turning. There is a great cast of characters, witty and enlightening dialog and just the right amount of angst between characters. This isn’t a preachy story, but a gentle reminder of seeking God. I love how when God and His will is placed first everything else seems to fall into place. This story does not leave on a cliffhanger. I look forward to many more books in this wonderful series.

STEPPING OUT BY FAITH
I enjoyed this heartwarming story of faith, acceptance and forgiveness. It is a reminder that in a split second, life can change. Accidents happen and placing blame or feeling guilty won’t undo what has happened. You must accept, adjust, amend and more forward. I love how the characters in this story have a deep faith in God. They are human with emotions that include self-doubt, seeking redemption and trying to move on. The plot kept me captivated, the characters are delightful, realistic and the dialog heartwarming and encouraging. Disclosure: I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
