Techniques of the Selling Writer

by Dwight V. Swain

Techniques of the Selling Writer

Techniques of the Selling Writer provides solid instruction for people who want to write and sell fiction, not just to talk and study about it. It gives the background, insights, and specific procedures needed by all beginning writers. Here one can learn how to group words into copy that moves, movement into scenes, and scenes into stories; how to develop characters, how to revise and polish, and finally, how to sell the product.

No one can teach talent, but the practical skills of the professional writer’s craft can certainly be taught. The correct and imaginative use of these kills can shorten any beginner’s apprenticeship by years.

This is the book for writers who want to turn rejection slips into cashable checks.

Hand Me Down Princess

The Monarchies of Belles Montagnes
Book 4: Mevendia

Prince Malachi Van Renssalaer of Mevendia is getting married. The problem? He’s never even met his bride. His father arranged everything, right down to the marriage contract. Malachi swears to himself that he will be nothing like his father in the ways that count – including his fidelity to his wife.

Jessabelle Keller would happily spend her entire life in obscurity, but her father once saved the life of a future king. Before he dies, her father is committed to seeing that king make good on his promise to have one of his sons marry her so she would be taken care of for life.

No sooner than Prince Malachi and Jessabelle return from their honeymoon, they find themselves dealing with both private trauma and the very public drama of groundless accusations from the press. Just as they begin to weave their fragile trust back together, a ghost from the king’s past arrives and threatens everything they’ve ever held dear.

Secrets have a funny way of coming out and this one could rip the faith of the country in their leaders to shreds. Malachi is determined to protect Jessabelle no matter what it takes, but will it ever be enough for her to not feel like a Hand-Me-Down Princess?

Heated Summer

Margaret Stephens has her sights set on marrying a man with a promising future. Nicholas Alexander is definitely not that man. Nicholas has seen enough gold diggers like Maggie. The purrfect little kitty who warms up to rich guys. Then when the unsuspecting bums marry them…they find kitty has claws. He’s already been scratched and isn’t about to make the same mistake twice.

Margaret doesn’t plan on ever going hungry again. A visit to the orphanage brings up a past she keeps trying to forget. To Nicholas, it’s a reminder of all the things he has to be thankful for and he hopes that Margaret will come to appreciate all that she has.

Can two people from different sides of the track meet somewhere in the middle? It’s a rough ride till they find out.

Two Minute Devotional: Why Do All of Those “Begat’s” In the Bible Matter?

Two Minute Devotional: Why Do All of Those “Begat’s” In the Bible Matter?

by Lisa M. Prysock

And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech. And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.  And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. Genesis 4:18-20

And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.  Genesis 4:21

At first glance, all of those passages of ‘who begat who’ may seem awfully boring, but through them, we not only see how generations were formed and those that carried the lineage of the Kings and tribes of Israel who birthed Christ the Messiah to the world; but we see how valuable each of these people were to God.  We see that many were the mothers, fathers, grandparents, siblings, or great grandparents… the list goes on…  who shaped ordinary people who often did extraordinary things!  Each of these names mentioned in the Bible are important to the Lord.  Each contributed to the world, and many contributed to the Kingdom of Heaven with their gifts and talents.

Can you imagine a world without music?  I’m thankful for Jubal.  Not all of us may appreciate steak, but I am also thankful for Jabal, because I appreciate the cattle that provide us with steak.

I believe God has placed something unique inside each and every one of us.  If you are a mother or a father, you are helping to shape someone else’s life.  If you are a teacher, you are shaping the students in your class.  If you are an aunt, a sister, brother, cousin, friend… you are impacting those around you.  Some of you have multiple talents.  Fathers, if you have a skill and support your family by using your skills, gifts, education, and/or talents, you are making a huge difference in the lives of your spouse and children.  I believe that the “begats” reveal the love of our Heavenly Father to us in that He offers to each of us redemption, salvation, and unique purpose in living.

Adam, the first man, named all of the animals.  Jubal developed musical instruments. Noah saved the animals during the great flood.  Abraham had great faith.  Moses had leadership ability.  Jacob birthed twelve princes of Israel.  Joseph could interpret dreams and had leadership ability.  King David could take down giants, wrote many of the Psalms, played the harp, made a fine Shepherd, and became one of the greatest earthly Kings Israel ever had.  Through his lineage, our Savior was born from into the earth.  In Christ, ye also trusted after ye heard the word of truth, the Gospel of your salvation, in whom also after ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise… (Ephesians 1:13)  The AMP version goes on to say we are as owned and protected by God!  Today and every day, we can take great joy in knowing how much the Lord cares for us and that He is with us on a daily basis watching over each one of us.  Not one of us is forgotten.  I am thankful that the “begats” reveal not only our heritage, but so much more to us!

And from the moment she meets Sam Conrad, they disagree about everything from her cat to how to best renovate a local nursing home.

Between her mother’s health issues and the hurricane brewing in the Gulf, Elinor feels like her life is being ripped apart. It doesn’t help that she’s falling for the man she’s determined not to trust. Sam finds himself drawn to Elinor, wanting to help her and this new family he’s grown to love. But can he overcome the barrier she’s built to keep him out? When the storm rages and the two of them are blown together, can Elinor find the faith to open her heart again?
