About the Book

Whether you are a new believer in Jesus Christ, or you’ve been following Him for a long time, layoffs present difficult, frightening challenges that can cause even the most devout Christian to doubt God’s love for them. HELP for the LAID OFF offers solid, practical advice in searching for a job while reminding readers that they can and should continue to trust God as their Divine Employer. While it’s OK and understandable for readers to experience a sense of loss, the author encourages them to not get stuck in an endless pity party, when they DO have a job … to FIND a job. Kaarto opens the reader’s minds to realize there are many good blessings that come during and as a result of being laid off, and that losing their job may be the best thing that could ever happen to them, in the long run. Family members and friends are advised by Kaarto how to show support for their loved one even if unable to provide financial assistance. Advice is also provided through interviews with Christian marriage and family counselor as well as Christian financial planner, to provide a thorough, well-rounded, thoughtful book to comfort and equip readers to press on in spite of hard times.

What’s happening to steady employment in this nation? Is it this way all over the world? Having just read this inspiring book, and attempting to research statistics on layoffs and unemployment claims during 2012, I became literally sickened at seeing the percentages and numbers for approximately 6 months. This layoff situation has happened personally to me, as well as other members of my family. The devastation hits everywhere, with no mercy, no comfort. However…Mary Kaarto has written with compassionate understanding of the hurt and fear during these critical experiences in “Help for the Laid Off.”

Recently my daughter was laid off and to date is still unemployed. It was no coincidence that author Mary Kaarto requested concurrently that I read and write a review on “Help for the Laid Off.” That is what I call a “Godincidence.” After reading the book, I handed it to my daughter to read and learn the spiritual tools Mary used through the hardships of forced unemployment. Ms Kaarto experienced bewildered struggling through two layoffs until she felt the mercy of our Lord pouring grace on her situation. She takes no credit for what she wrote in this book, she gives it all to the Lord.

Having a personal relationship with God is the key component to “making it through” this tough period of time without employment. Ms Kaarto’s wisdom of scripture in God’s Word is entirely spiritual in providing evidence that God desires one to trust in Him. We don’t understand our dilemma as God does, and perhaps this setback is a part of His way to guiding you down a different path. Ms. Kaarto encourages us to seek and pray for God’s will to turn our situation in a positive direction. The sage old advice of creating a full time job out of seeking a job still stands during this time.

Mary Kaarto shares rapport and priceless information she learned during her job search that will give the job seeker hope instead of dread. Fore mostly, she places eager emphasis multiple times to convey that the laid off are not alone in this quandary. To know that others share your situation and that God loves you is comforting. This writing has given my daughter peace and solutions to the long wait until her next job; as well as deepening her relationship with the Lord. It is always beneficial to seek God for all answers during any situation. Ms Mary Kaarto’s writing is very worthwhile and a ready help to those that feel they have lost more than just a job. Praise the Lord for knowing this book was needed before my daughter did. Thank you, Mary Kaarto!

be_you_2_250If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! 2 Corinthians 3:9 (NLT)

What would it look like for you to be bold, transparent, free, and truly the person God created you to be? What would it look like for you to BE YOU?

In this four week mini Bible Study journey with author Heather Bixler as she shares some of her personal struggles with you in an effort to be transparent with you, the reader.

God wants us to shine and radiate His glory, but truly this can only be done through our brokenness. God is looking for transparent women to help guide others to a true and intimate relationship with Jesus through the sharing of their own brokenness, and compassion for one another.

If we are truly going to shine for HIS glory in the new ministry of HIS righteousness then we must learn the art of being who God created us to be. We often think this is found through performance and behavior changes, but when we have given our life over to Jesus then everything God created us to be is found in the Holy Spirit that is already living within us.

Title: Hey Warrior Kids! Grab Your Slingshot!

Author: Virginia Finnie

Rating: 5 stars

About the Book

Every child has experienced it. Lying in bed, in the dark and feeling afraid. Is there a monster in the closet or under the bed? What’s a kid to do? Beginning with the retelling of the story of David and Goliath, Hey Warrior Kids! Grab Your Slingshot! gives kids the weapons they need to battle the “”giant of fear.”” Their slingshot is God’s Word (the Bible) and their smooth stones are God’s Truth (scripture). God’s Warrior Kids are encouraged to speak out God’s Truth to overcome fear. Hey Warrior Kids! Grab Your Slingshot! is the second book in the Hey Warrior Kids! series. Look for Hey Warrior Kids! Put On Your Armor! to learn about the armor God has given us all to wear to battle every day.

As a clinical psychologist, I am often searching for material to use in my therapy session with children. I was surprised on so many different levels by this book. I initially bought it to read to my nieces as a bedtime story. However, I quickly realized that it was packed with a lot of powerful information. This book retells the story of David and Goliath in a way that children can understand. However, it does not stop there. The author helps children to apply the story of David and Goliath to their lives by explaining how every child has a slingshot (the Bible) and smooth stones (bible verses). This book also teaches children how their thoughts can overcome fears (and other life circumstances). The book ends by walking children through a personal example (feeling afraid at night).
I plan on using this book in my therapy session to help teach children the importance of meditating on God’s Word; remembering what God says about them and not what a bully says; the importance of your thoughts (CBT); how to handle fear; and how as Christians we do not have to be afraid of anything because God is bigger. I am looking forward to seeing what is next in the Hey Warrior Kids series.

When Thanksgiving Gets Stuck in Your Throat

Not everyone will have a happy Thanksgiving…especially this year. Many are out of work, have issues relating to health, children, or family. Some are facing the holiday season for the first time as they mourn the loss of a loved one or as a divorcee.

So, what happens to their thanksgiving and praise when their peace disintegrates into chaos?

As I go through trial after trial, circumstance after circumstance, what happens to my praise and thanksgiving? What happens when my day is darkened with a multitude of problems? Do I still sing to Him anyway? You bet! When my eyes spill over with the tears of heartache, do I still look to Him and praise Him? Absolutely! When chaos invades my world, do I still claim His peace and praise Him? Yes, indeedy! For “I will praise the Lord no matter what happens. I will constantly speak of His glories and grace.” (Ps. 34:1 TLB)

I have learned to transform my attitude into one of gratitude as Habakkuk did.

In the closing words of his book, the prophet asserted his faith in God and promised to praise Him, even if all else failed. “Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vine; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation.” (Hab. 3:17-18 NLT)

Paul’s statement is now mine, “I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of contentment in every situation, whether it be a full stomach or hunger, plenty or want.” (Phil. 4:12 TLB) This statement has taken up residence in my heart, “No matter what happens, always be thankful, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” (1 Thess. 5:18 TLB)

Are life’s fiery darts aimed at your life, attempting to puncture your heart?
What seeps out of your heart? Whatever is going on in your life, there is always room for thanksgiving! It is the sacrificial gift of your heart. So what does it cost you?

A true, sacrificial gift may cost you the surrender of your money, as you give sacrificially like the widow who gave her two mites. It may cost you the surrender of your time, as you sacrifice to put God first. It may cost you the surrender of your heart, as you sacrifice your love to those who hate you. It may cost you the surrender of your lips, as you sacrifice your praise to God when all seems lost.

Though you may be going through some really rotten things right now, praise the Lord anyway. Praise and thanksgiving may not change your surroundings but it will change your attitude.

Thanksgiving is not a once-a-year holiday. Thanksgiving is an eternal season of the heart, an overflow of the heart’s gratitude for all that God has done and is going to do and for everything one possesses, no matter how much or how little that may be.

Will you have Habakkuk’s attitude this Thanksgiving season? Don’t let Thanksgiving get stuck in your throat! May the Lord touch you in a special way this Thanksgiving. May it become an eternal season in your heart.
